Two Maintenance Tips To Keep Your Water Heater Working Properly

Although it's probably tucked away in some obscure portion of your garage or basement, your water heater is one of the most vital appliances in your home.  Imagine filling your kitchen sink with greasy dishes after a meal, only to find that your water will only run cold.  This is what can happen if you don't make regular maintenance on your water heater a priority.  However, this doesn't have to happen to you; use this information to learn more about two things you can do to help keep your water heater in good working condition.

Insulate Your Water Heater

One of the most important things you can do to maintain your water heater is add insulation to it.  An insulation jacket is typically easy to find and is relatively inexpensive but can prove to be nearly invaluable.

Your water heater uses a great deal of energy to heat the water that enters the unit through the plumbing pipes in your home.  This is especially true if you have an older model that may not operate as efficiently as newer models.  If there is no insulation around your water heater, it could be sustaining standby heat loss, which makes it go into overdrive in order to heat the water inside of the tank.  As a result, your water heater may deteriorate more quickly because of the excess work.

To determine whether your water heater needs insulation, gently place your hands near the unit.  If you feel heat coming off of it, it's time to visit your local hardware store to purchase an insulation jacket.  Once the jacket is in place, regularly check it to make sure that it is not ripped or otherwise damaged and not able to perform properly.

Flush Sediment From Your Water Heater

Another activity you can do to maintain your water heater is flush sediment from the tank.  The sediment settles in your tank and could be harming its performance.

Sediment such as lime or calcium appear in the water supply in many parts of the country.  As this sediment builds up on the bottom of your tank, it covers up the flames that are designed to heat the water, thereby making the unit consume more energy.

Flushing your unit on at least an annual basis is a great way to combat this.  If you live in an area with particularly hard water, you may want to consider increasing this frequency.
